Find your passion with a range of subjects to suit you

At St Michael’s Collegiate, we believe in the power of a holistic education. While academic achievement is a cornerstone of our Senior School, our broader aim is to develop well-rounded individuals equipped with the essential skills and values to lead fulfilling lives. Through rich, authentic learning experiences, both in and beyond the classroom, our students build transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, collaboration, ethical decision-making, adaptability, and resilience.

Our curriculum, guided by the Australian Curriculum, is academically rigorous, sequential, and designed to build strong foundations for success in Years 11 and 12, further education, and life beyond school. In Years 9 and 10, students begin to enjoy greater independence and can explore specialised areas of interest, supported by expert teachers and carefully structured programs.

A diverse range of co-curricular and enrichment opportunities further enhances learning, including sport, the arts, service learning, outdoor education, and programs such as the iFutures Hub, Experiential Learning, Learning Support, and the School of Performing Arts.

We are proud to foster a culture where students are encouraged to pursue excellence, nurture their passions, and learn bravely together.

Years 9 and 10 curriculum

A challenging core academic program covering English, Mathematics, Humanities, Science, Religion and Philosophy and Health and Physical Education is offered. All subjects follow, and are assessed against, the Australian Curriculum.

The elective subject program is combined in Years 9 and 10. Students can choose an individual learning program over the two years, depending on their interests and strengths. This ensures that different types of learning experiences are available for all students.

The elective program includes:

  • Languages (Chinese).
  • Expressive Arts including Music, Dance, Drama, Textiles, Art and Graphic Design
  • Integrated subjects combining two or more faculties across many subject areas
  • STEAM/STEM learning opportunities
  • More in-depth and focused learning in a subject area
  • Project-based learning opportunities that encourage students to take ownership of their learning and pursue individual learning programs.

Please note that elective subject availability is dependent year-to-year on student interest and participation.

Years 11 and 12

Our aim is for all Collegiate students to leave school with the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). We provide opportunities for all students to attain certification by meeting the standards outlined by the Office of Tasmanian Assessment Standards and Certification (TASC).

Collegiate students in Years 11 and 12 can access:

  • Level 2, 3 and 4 TASC-accredited subjects on campus
  • Further subject opportunities at The Hutchins School, our brother school
  • VET opportunities and personalised school-based traineeships
  • Subjects offered through the UTAS Connections Program
  • Individual pathway planning and counselling for options after Year 12.

Our partnership with both The Hutchins School and Fahan School allows all the participating schools to offer a broader range of subjects to suit our students. This does mean that some subjects will be offered off-site at either The Hutchins School or Fahan School, and that both Hutchins and Fahan students may visit the Collegiate Senior Campus from time to time.

Please note that subject availability is dependent year-to-year on student interest and participation.
