Student Wellbeing

At St Michael’s Collegiate, student wellbeing is not something we “add on” — it is the foundation of learning.

When a student feels safe, supported and understood, they can flourish.

Our philosophy

We believe girls learn best when they feel:

Known
Safe
Valued
Connected

Our wellbeing framework ensures every student is supported academically, socially and emotionally from their very first day at Collegiate.

We establish positive relationships with students early in their journey, taking the time to understand the connection between their study practices, future aspirations and overall wellbeing. Through thoughtful career development and guidance, we aim to support both their mental health and their sense of purpose.

Every student is different. We tailor career development to the individual, allowing students the space to explore their interests and define their own goals. Personal interviews with students, along with ongoing engagement with Mentor groups and families, help us build a comprehensive understanding of each student’s aspirations and needs.

A key part of our approach is helping students learn how to shape their own futures. We connect students with professionals in their areas of interest through work experience opportunities and visits from industry and workplace representatives. Our team also maintains up-to-date knowledge of pathways and opportunities to ensure students receive accurate and relevant guidance.

By building strong partnerships with academics and professionals both within and beyond the School, we ensure staff have access to current information and insights. This collaborative approach provides students with multiple sources of support and empowers them to take confident steps toward their future.

Supporting a confident start

Supporting a confident start

We understand that starting a new school can feel overwhelming.

Our Student for a Day program allows prospective students to spend time immersed in school life — participating in classes, meeting peers and experiencing the culture of Collegiate before making a commitment.

This experience helps girls build confidence, familiarity and a sense of belonging before formally enrolling.

Student Wellbeing

House System

Our pastoral care is strengthened by eight Houses, each with its own identity and House spirit. Being an active House member gives a sense of fun, connection and purpose to the school day.

Dedicated layers of support

Your daughter is never navigating school life alone.

Our Pastoral Care Coordinator (Junior School), and Deputy Heads of School (Middle and Senior School) play an active role in supporting students’ wellbeing, particularly during transition periods. They work closely with teachers, families and students to ensure each girl feels secure, seen and supported.

Students are also supported through their Class Mentors, who act as trusted adults and consistent points of care, monitoring wellbeing, academic progress and social connections.

Strong partnerships with families

Strong partnerships with families

We believe the strongest wellbeing outcomes occur when school and home work together.

Clear, consistent communication between parents and the School is a priority. We encourage families to keep open dialogue with teachers, Mentors and Heads of School so concerns can be addressed early and support can be tailored appropriately.
Together, we build the strongest possible support network around each student.

Professional wellbeing support

Collegiate provides access to qualified School Psychologists who support students with:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Anxiety and stress management
  • Social challenges
  • Confidence and resilience

Students can be referred for support through pastoral staff or in partnership with families, and support is always confidential, respectful and student-centred.

We also have our School Chaplain on hand to offer additional support as needed.

Mobile phones and smart devices

Mobile phones and smart devices

To support focus, connection and healthy digital habits, Collegiate maintains clear expectations around mobile phones and smart devices.

At Collegiate:
• Mobile phones are to be turned off and stored in school bags or lockers during the school day.
• Phones are not to be used on campus during school hours.
• Smart watches and similar devices are to be set to school mode for the duration of the school day.

This approach supports learning, presence, peer connection and digital wellbeing.

A skilled workplace

St Michael’s Collegiate has been recognised by Mental Health First Aid Australia as a Skilled workplace. This recognises our commitment to training our staff to proactively support the mental health of our students and staff members. We are extremely proud of this achievement.

Through this process, we have a solid understanding of mental health and mental illness. Where needed, we refer families to mental health professionals, so they receive continuous support and stability throughout their schooling and afterwards.
