Support and extension
Every learner is different. Every pathways matters.
The EDGE Program (Enrichment, Differentiation and Gifted Education) exists to make sure every student receives the level of challenge, support and opportunity she needs to thrive.
Some students require learning support to build strong foundations. Others benefit from extension, acceleration or deeper challenge. EDGE ensures that each girl receives the learning environment that fits her.
Supporting every type of learner
EDGE is designed to support the full range of learner needs, including students who:
- Need targeted support with literacy, numeracy or learning strategies
- Benefit from small group or one-to-one instruction
- Demonstrate advanced academic ability
- Learn quickly and require greater challenge
- Show exceptional thinking, creativity or talent in specific areas
Our approach is inclusive, respectful and flexible. Participation in EDGE changes over time, based on student need and development.
Individual learning pathways
Students are identified through a range of thoughtful measures, including:
- Teacher observation and referral
- Diagnostic and standardised testing
- Parent consultation
- External assessment where appropriate
- Ongoing academic monitoring
Programs are then tailored to the student, and may include:
- In-class learning adjustments
- Small group learning support
- Extension activities and enrichment tasks
- Mentoring and specialised programs
Each student’s progress is reviewed regularly, with open communication between school and families.
Learning support
For students who require additional support, EDGE provides structured learning assistance that focuses on:
- Literacy and spelling
- Mathematics
- Study and executive functioning skills
- Building independence and confidence
Support may be provided through:
- Junior School small group or individual sessions
- Years 5–10 Curriculum Skills / IF Hub classes
- Senior School Study Centre
The goal is always to build capacity, confidence and independence.
Gifted and extended learning
For high-potential and gifted students, EDGE offers extension and enrichment opportunities that deepen learning rather than rushing it.
This includes:
- Differentiated curriculum in the classroom
- Small group extension programs
- Project-based learning and problem-based challenges
- Academic mentoring
We carefully monitor student wellbeing and engagement to ensure extension remains healthy, balanced and meaningful.
Short courses and enrichment experiences
EDGE also supports rich short-course learning experiences that extend thinking beyond traditional subjects.
A recent Ethics and Philosophy short course invited students to explore the idea of “The Good Life”, examining perspectives such as Buddhism and Virtue Ethics. Students engaged in deep discussion, challenged assumptions and practiced ethical reasoning under the guidance of experienced staff.
These experiences are designed to build curiosity, critical thinking and confidence.
Why EDGE matters
EDGE supports the School’s commitment to:
- Meeting every learner where she is
- Helping each student reach her potential
- Strengthening confidence and independence
- Preparing girls for future learning and leadership
Through EDGE, learning is not one-size-fits-all — it is personal.
