What might a city look like if imagination had no limits?
Our Year 7 artists have been exploring that question through My Whimsical World of Wonder, an imaginative art project where creativity shapes the space and every corner holds a new discovery.
Inspired by the vibrant visual worlds of artists David Hockney and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, students have created their own fantastical cities and landscapes, exploring colour, perspective, architecture and the relationship between built and natural environments.
Hockney’s bold use of colour, playful landscapes and distinctive approaches to perspective provided students with inspiration to look at familiar environments in new ways. They also explored Hundertwasser’s dreamlike architectural style, characterised by spirals, uneven lines, golden domes and a strong connection between nature and buildings.
Our Learning
Drawing on these influences, students developed their own whimsical worlds where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Buildings twist and grow, trees reach towards the sky, pathways lead somewhere unexpected and colour transforms the landscape.
The project has encouraged students to develop their understanding of design elements while experimenting with artistic expression and finding their own creative voice. Each artwork reflects an individual interpretation of what a world could look like when imagination is given the freedom to lead.
The result is a collection of colourful and wonderfully imaginative environments that invite viewers to pause, explore and see the world a little differently.
My Whimsical World of Wonder is a celebration of creativity, curiosity and the idea that sometimes the most interesting places are the ones we imagine for ourselves.
