Meet Janine Delaney, Head of Performing Arts
We are thrilled to introduce Janine Delaney, who joined St Michael’s Collegiate as our new Head of Performing Arts this year. With a lifelong passion for theatre, dance, drama, and music, Janine brings immense energy and expertise to our creative programs.
What drew Janine to Collegiate?
“The biggest drawcard for me was the prospect of this newly created role of Head of Performing Arts—a position that combines my undeniable love of theatre and performance (Dance, Drama, Music) with working in teams of like-minded staff to promote our creative areas. The chance to take on such a role was just too exciting to miss!”
First impressions
“My first impressions of Collegiate have undoubtedly been that this is a place of inclusion, support, friendliness, and respect for each other—students, staff, administration alike. There is a warmth amongst the members of this community that is tangible and makes coming here to work a delight!”
Janine’s journey in the Performing Arts began as a young child growing up on a dairy farm, where her parents encouraged her to explore dance (ballet, tap, and jazz), piano, and drama. This early foundation led her to study Dance, Drama, and English at university in Melbourne, while she continued teaching piano privately and accompanying AMEB exams. She has performed in Melbourne Fringe Theatre, directed children’s performances at Club Med resorts in Bali and Noumea, and taught in Melbourne, Geelong, and for the last 22 years in Queensland—where she served as Head of Drama and directed 22 senior productions across drama, comedy, and musical theatre.
Teaching
At Collegiate, Janine teaches Year 8 English and Year 5 Drama, while serving as a Year 9 Mentor. Pastoral care remains at the heart of her approach: “I love to build relationships with all the students I teach and enjoy listening to their stories and the unique experiences they bring each day.”
Looking ahead
Janine is eager to continue her involvement in the Performing Arts at Collegiate and is particularly looking forward to directing the Middle School Musical for 2026 (details to be revealed soon!). “I can’t wait to begin the audition process and to see the energy, talent, and enthusiastic commitment in those students who want to be a part of the show.”
Drawing from her own life experiences as a daughter, partner, mother, and educator, Janine believes in the power of sharing stories: “We can all learn from each other when we tell stories and share our experiences. This is what I hope to do as a Mentor and teacher at Collegiate.”
Welcome to the Collegiate family, Janine! Your passion and warmth are already inspiring our girls to shine on stage and beyond. We look forward to the creative magic you’ll bring to our community in the years ahead.
