Staff Spotlight – Nicole Young

Nicole Young

School Psychologist

What do you love about your job? I most love the variety and pace of my job. Every day is different and this is even more relevant working in a school. The little things that fill me with joy are, supporting young people to understand and manage their emotions and seeing teachers employ strategies that have positive impacts on their students.

What made you want to study psychology? When I started studying, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, or what psychology was. Yet it seemed like a good fit, as growing up I was always the interested and empathetic one who would ask people about their stories and loved being around children. I do, however, recall reading ‘One Child’ by Torey Hayden, when I was a teenager and thinking that I want to do that job, so I guess that shaped me.

What is one thing you would go back and tell your 14-year-old self? Oh, so many things. I’d love to have understood my emotions better at a younger age. But also, to never be afraid to ask why.

What is one thing you would love to do, if you could you do anything? I’d love to be able to sing and sound good.

If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would be seated at your table? My Grandmother, Freddy Mercury, Mr Bean (in character) and Tom Tilley.

Nicole will be running two online workshops for parents. These workshops aim to provide information about Anxiety, as well as discuss the strategies that you can use at home to support your child or young person.
