Staff Spotlight – Todd Blackhall

Quick Questions with Todd!

Todd Blackhall is our Director of Experiential Learning.

What do you love about your job?
The breadth and diversity. Being a K-12 role, I get to engage with students across each sub school. Recent weeks have included working with Year 1 and 2 in outdoor learning sessions in the JS Garden, working with Year 8 PBL (Project Based Learning) students engaged in design thinking, working on improving outdoor learning spaces in the ‘Fusion’ elective and supporting the year level programs (ASPIRE and Connect). I have also recently started as a Year 12 Mentor. As an outdoor educator, I love the feeling around a group on day 1 with the buzz of excitement about the coming experience and the sense of achievement at the end of a program. Memorable experiences can be a great platform for future learning. The professional conversations here at Collegiate are also a highlight!

How did you end up in your current role?
I spent 15 years in outdoor education and wanted to be involved in more areas of learning. This position has allowed me to continue to use my experience in the outdoors, but to broaden more into developing immersive student centred learning experiences through PBL, service learning and environmental education.

What is one thing you would go back and tell your 14 year-old self?
“The next 30 years will fly by”
Enjoy every moment and pursue the opportunities that seem to take a little more effort. Oh, and buy shares in Apple.

What is one thing you would love to do, if you could you do anything?
That’s a hard one! Sail around the Pacific.

If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would be seated at your table?
Eddie Veddar, David Attenborough, Yuval Noah Harari and my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandpa.
